Concrete Ideaogora - Fashioning Concrete
Fashioning Concrete - A new Fashion hub for Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
Exploratory work of concrete with the implementation of the process of drapery used in fashion design informed the starting point of this project. This lead to the exploration of draping fabric over inhabited volumes, as seen on the mannequin in fashion design, rather than creating volumes, as in architecture design. These forms informed the Canopy design and extra explorations with fabrics lead to knitting the fabric thus increasing the textural qualities which can be seen in the light quality within the building. The final result consists of an inverted volume of the vaults imitated by the draped knitted fabric forming the canopy. The knitted fabric is angled north - south imitating the grain line found on a pattern piece in fashion design. These explorations alongside social issues of Newcastle informed the program of the building, a fashion hub for Newcastle. A building aiming to aid a more hands on career path to those unemployed as well as those who merely want to observe or have an informal lesson over a coffee. The building accommodates a hub of activity, one which is revealed upon entry to the building in a similar manner to that of a fashion house presenting their seasons collection. This privacy from the outside is created with the canopy draping over the volume of the vaults but then inside causes dramatic lighting. Where five levels, two lower and three above the vaults, are centered around the catwalk situated in the Vaults. With a lack of places in Newcastle for those interested in designing and making fashion the building brings everyone together to act as a ‘catwalk’ of everyones ideas. Incorporating a shop, exhibition space, showcase and teaching center to form something for everyone. With its prime location in Newcastle it acts as a shop front to the cities creativity as well as being conveniently located near to the city center. Overall its a hub of creativity for all and allows for participation at any level inspiring every generation.
